Research I always like to attend research talks at suitable – MS! – events to try and keep up to date as an interested patient. We know there is a great deal of related news that appears in the media, that does not actually carry a great deal of weight behind the copy due to their sources (that I know of not!). So I had to attend the ‘Making a difference through research’ talk. The lecture /talk was indeed a Neurologist talk performed by Professor Siddharthan Chandran . A very knowledgeable and funny guy! As an avid listener, I literally scribbled down a few notes only: > STEM Cell research positives carrying belief. Remyelination. > Future MS. Removing uncertainty. Future-ms.org > GUT reaction study. 60-80% autoimmune activity occurs in the gut. It made sense then! Those 3 notes might not be useful at all, but here’s the but. Me doing my own bit research to support this blog I came across this talk, missing a few new/er ideas for your

Exercise This session was presented by Manolis Sfakianakis , a Physiotherapist, from/with MS Therapy Centre Lothian, MS Society Scotland . The aim was to for us to get familiarized with the concept of regular exercise for wellbeing, learn what type of exercise is appropriate for us and to set goals to improve our level of fitness. Easy, obviously. With that we were also helped and guided, in theory, to learn how to develop and maintain potential(!) exercise planning. Again, from scribbles: ·              ‘What is exercise?’ o    ‘Anything requiring energy.’ So most are ok then, by doing something?! Ahem. ·              ‘Why exercise?’ o    This was followed with another group discussion, that lead to plenty of shared input and good ideas/answers from many. ·              ‘Benefits to the whole body.’  The CV, musculoskeletal, nervous, systems; and mood (improvements). o    I couldn’t agree more, as when I manage to attend an exercise class it does inde

Diet and exercise As I have an interest in both diet and exercise, this was a no-brainer as a first choice; I live and love both! Diet: Tracey Harrison was the presenter (a stand in, due to a sad bereavement) for the diet element – not ignoring exercise links it must be added; Manolis Sfakianakis to do / did the exercise part after Tracey. Tracey brought a lot of energy with her interacting well with us all giving brilliant ‘diet data’ and how they relate, or can relate, to MS and other conditions using the presentation superbly. I scribbled down: ·              ‘ Diet : Conflicting views’ o    in that there are SO many different ideas as to what is good for what and when; right and wrong; should shouldn’t; amounts; tried tested… I was listening, enjoying and focused best I could; so I have (of course) forgotten a bit! o    Offers a sense of control §   it’s your diet, your choice o    Key to self management §   Promoting good general health and

Living with MS Edinburgh *This is my bit blog and therefore my thoughts/options * on Living with MS Edinburgh being an information day for anyone affected by MS that I happily attended, and will be more about the day than the travel to and from it ! This event was held in the Sheraton Hotel which was beautifully laid out, in a spacious floor in the hotel with many orange-clad volunteers supporting the 150 attendees. MS Scotland The area in the hotel had been planned well, wasn’t too big or small offering fine accessibility and had plenty of MS stuff throughout! So what was the order of the day, what happened? It began with a welcome from the chair, Mary Douglas from the MS Society Scotland (9:45 – 10:00) welcoming us and touching on what was ahead. Breaking Boundaries in MS Research , was started straight after ( ~ 10:00) by Becky Driscoll. A fairly generic(ish) overview (IMO!) of MS initially, presented very well. The content was detailed and shows/sh
